On the Homefront

The part of the 40's that I find very interesting is the story of the people on the homefront.  Unlike today's war the people in the 40's truly sacrificed. They had rationing on food, tires, gas, coffee and shoes, the women left behind had to do their best to support their families.  Canning became a popular and necessary thing to do, the food that they grew would feed them for months to come.  Canning jars filled with different foods lined the shelves of American homes.  Families also had the pain of watching a loved one go to war never knowing if they would return...many did not.  A blue star was placed in the windows of the those who were in the service, a gold star was placed in the window when that soldier lost his life for his country.  Women in that time period also went to work and filled the jobs left by the many men who went to war.  Blackout drills were also something to be dealt with at home.  When the air raid siren sounded blackout curtains were closed and lights went out until the "all clear" siren was sounded. This is only a very small part of daily life for those in WWII on the homefront but those that lived through this time period were strong people they dealt with alot....more than I think we could today.

Welcome!

http://www.wix.com/giamei24/remembering-the-usa

I've created this page to talk about the 1940's.  Being a 40's enthusiast I love talking to people who have already lived through the 40's and the WWII period or just those who enjoy learning about it.  If you are someone who enjoys the 40's please share your experiences or just those things you enjoy about the time period.  Hope to meet all of you soon!
